Joanne

Joanne is currently undertaking a work placement as a Kitchen Assistant at Watcombe Primary School in South Devon. She is a very positive lady, with a great work ethic. Joanne was Pluss’ first customer to produce a video CV. Joanne has a learning disability.

Joanne’s words
“My job here includes making the fruit salad, laying the tables, washing the dishes, getting the fruit that you want to put into a fruit salad and chopping up.

I have just moved into my own flat.

I love card making, any sort of cards – birthday cards, christmas cards. I use the pictures you get from computers. I got taught how to do that by a friend. I am still a beginner, but I am quite good. I have sold a couple but I want to make a profile of the cards I have done to sell them and see if people want to buy them.

You get to know people when you work in a team and it’s a friendly environment to work in.

I am honest, hard working and willing to learn. I have got a catering qualification – NPTC (City and Guilds) and that’s given me a bit more confidence.

I would love a job because I am hard working and willing to learn new skills - maybe another catering job. I have done a lot of work placements in catering.

A job coach would come with me in the first few weeks, to give me a bit of confidence and help me learn new skills and tasks. There is also funding available to help me - and different training.”

Sam Corben
Kitchen Manager

“It’s a very busy kitchen. It gets busier every week. Today we are cooking for 150.

Joanne is a very happy girl, a very willing girl. She is a good timekeeper and is happy to try something new. She also fits well into a routine and she knows her job very well.

When she first came to me, I was frightened she wouldn’t talk to me because she was very timid. But within a couple of weeks she was very happy to talk to me.

I think the fact that you only have to ask once, and you know she is going to do it - which is a good quality in everybody isn’t it!”

About Pluss

Pluss is a Social Enterprise that supports thousands of people with disabilities and other disadvantages into employment each year. We do this through a range of specialist, local employment services and through direct employment within our own Social Enterprises.

We passionately believe that our services should always include those furthest from the labour market and offer specialist employment support to people with a learning disability, mental health issues, physical disabilities and long term health issues.

We also believe that people with disabilities make excellent employees and are committed to directly employing disabled people; around half of our 500 strong workforce has a disability.

Pluss operates throughout South West England and West Yorkshire, with partner Social Enterprises across the UK. We currently develop , deliver and manage a range of innovative employability programmes on behalf of DWP (Work Choice prime contractor), a number of local authorities, NHS, European Social Fund and the Skills Funding Agency.

Pluss is owned by Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council, Somerset Council and Torbay Council.
