Keeping Safe - Total Communications packs
Total Communications is about using lots of different ways of communicating to find the best method for each person you talk to. These include gesture, signing, speech, writing, photographs, symbols and objects.
Pluss work with a team of people to develop and produce information in a Total Communication format.
Pluss can not only develop and produce information for you, but we can also produce and market material that you have developed, and pay you a royalty on all units sold.
Keeping Safe Booklets
With the help of our customers, we have developed 10 Booklets to help people with learning disabilities understand more about several subjects. These booklets are all easy to read with lots of colour pictures, symbols and big writing.

Safe Place Scheme
The Safe Place Scheme was initiated by the South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership. This is a merged partnership consisting of statutory and voluntary agencies from the South Hams, Teignbridge and West Devon. The project aims to stop bullying and abuse of adults with learning disabilities across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
So how does the scheme work?
Each person with a learning disability will carry a card containing their name and personal contact details in order that the manager or member of staff in the shop knows whom to contact. We do not expect participating businesses to have to make many calls, but they will provide a temporary safe haven for this very vulnerable group within our community until help and support is accessed.
A similar scheme has been used in Kingsbridge and Ivybridge in the past and proved to be very successful. It has been decided this is the right time to update the scheme and expand initially to other parts of South Hams, Teignbridge and West Devon.
The Keeping Safe Pack—Devon and Cornwall
Linked to the Safe Place Scheme is the Keeping Safe Pack. The Keeping Safe Pack was originally developed in Hertfordshire to stop bullying and abuse of adults with a learning disability, and to ensure that the support was there from the Police and other agencies. Keeping Safe Pack Hertfordshire created a large orange folder with keep safe information for people with a learning disability.
Our customers here in Devon have decided that they would like to have smaller colour information booklets with ‘real-life’ stories in the back, so we are now developing and producing nine booklets to help people with a learning disability to keep safe. Once our booklets have been developed and produced — hopefully with the help of the Big Lottery we will roll them out across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly along with the Safe Place Scheme.
The ’roll-out’ will involve people with learning disabilities being trained to use the information booklets and to understand when it is appropriate to use the Safe Place Scheme.
