Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organisation that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools.

Since starting operations in 1997, Dress for Success has expanded to almost 145 cities in 20 countries and has helped more than 850,000 women work towards self-sufficiency.

The Leeds operation, run by Ingrid Bale, is located on the floor above Pluss at Symons House on Belgrave Street in Leeds. We introduced Joanna and Samantha as volunteers in January 2016. “Joanna and Samantha have been brilliant” said Ingrid, “Dress for Success has a number of charitable commissions to fulfill and their skills have been invaluable.”

Both Joanna and Samantha are looking for full time employment in a range of sectors and having this voluntary opportunity on their CVs allows them to promote their recent sewing experience when applying for machinist roles.

“I’ve really enjoyed it” said Joanna, “I’ve always loved sewing at home and it’s nice to work with a group of people on bigger projects; especially knowing that the garments and products will raise money for the charity”.

Samantha added “Yes, it’s good to be able to share our skills with people who have never sewn before too, Ingrid’s sewing classes are great for sharing ideas and techniques.”

Joanna’s CV was recently seen by a recruitment agency on Indeed and this led to an interview for a sewing machinist position. Joanna is hopeful that she may have a full time position at a local factory in the near future.
