Disability Confident inspires Plymouth Employers

James photoToday we held our uplifting annual Disablity Confident event in Plymouth.

We were delighted to be joined by 140 delegates who all wanted to know more about the business benefits of employing someone with a disablity.

The audience were blown away as James Roper picked up his Disability Confident 'Achiever of the Year 2017' award. Following diagnosis of severe mental health conditions, James hit rock bottom and was sectioned. Life briefly started to look up when his son was born - which James described as the happiest day of his life. Sadly, his relationship broke down and James’ wife left with their son. He was sectioned and found himself alone with no support from friends or family. Through Positive People, James now has meaningful employment. He says it has changed his life.

DCH and Plymouth City Council received awards for our Disability Confident 'Employers of the Year 2017'. Both spoke from the heart about personal experiences and the difference that Pluss customers, Robert, Jason and Ross have made to their business.

Group photoWe also had speeches from Nuffield Health, Laura Rowe (our awesome MC) and Johnny Mercer MP. The event finished with entertainment from local folk singer, Evani Evangelou, who put her own unique take on some lovely uplifting songs.

The icing on the cake was when Pluss customer, Matt, was offered a job immediately after the event. He starts in the kitchen at Plymouth Albion Rugby Club tomorrow.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and took part.

What a day!
