Loving her new job - Sophia's story

Go back to previous page

Our amazing participant Sophia started work recently as a carer and is absolutely loving her new job.

With the responsibility of being a single Mum, Sophia had been unable to work since 2015. She had previously done some voluntary work and now she had some free time during school hours her thoughts turned to what she would like to do as a career.

Sophia was unsure about the work she would like to do, so with her Change Coach, she explored her skills, interests and the potential jobs that might suit her. Sophia talked about how she had cared for her Nan, helping her to get dressed every day, washing and feeding her. She discussed care work with her Change Coach and how that might fit around school hours and weekends. Seetec Pluss is working with a family-run home care company and we had already supported someone into work where Sophia would be working who absolutely loved it there.

An interview was arranged for Sophia and she was given the wonderful news that they were offering her the job two days before lockdown. At this challenging time, Sophia was unable to start the role straight away as her young son would not be at school and was unable to be cared for by someone else. Contact with the team was maintained during this time until Sophia was able to start her new job.

Sophia is loving her new role and is thoroughly enjoying the interaction she has with customers. She is doing so well that she has been offered more shifts and is looking forward to a career in care. What a really wonderful outcome.

The Work and Health Programme is co-financed by the European Social Fund.
